It Has Begun

In Kerbal Space Program (KSP) there is a wonderful modification (mod) called Better Than Starting Manned (BTSM). The author of this mod is named FlowerChild or FC for short. FC has created a challenging aspect to KSP. Not only do you do space missions, but with BTSM you have to think about what your next goal is and plan accordingly. When you add in KSP carreer mode, you need to do missions for Funds (the name of kerbal money in game) otherwise your space program will go broke, BTSM adds a level to the game that is just down right fun. For example do you research decouplers or another tank and rocket. Both can get you into an orbit but one will be cheaper for you or will allow you to do a few more missions for the Funds and science.

Now that I have learn most of how it all works. Orbital Object Propulsion Systems will be tracking how it gets things done.

(please note I will try to update at least once a week on Sunday, however some weeks I will not be able to post a mission or four because of my schedule)

Mission 004: C Series Rocket Sparrow Model 1

OOPS mission select board notice there was a mission to send a Kerbal at least 12.5km and bakc alive. Jebediah Kerman persuaded the engineer to design a new rocket series; C Series Sparrow 1.

Unfortunately this was a rush job and proper testing was not done before the launch. Engineers decided to to add a barometer to look at pressure to decide when would be a could place for the parachutes to open. They also added extra batteries to make sure the craft did not run out of electricity. Although the engineers thought they had balanced the craft properly it was not and around 2200 meters the craft developed a roll to the right. The roll got critical at around 4000 meter and it was clear the Sparrow 1 was going to be pointing toward Kerbin instead of point toward the sky. Sparrow completed one full rotation and only reached 4900 meters, far from the goal of 12.5km, as Jeb began collecting the data engineers wanted and setting the center chuute to open at 0.2 pressure. As the craft continue to rotate Jeb thought of a way to complete the mission by shutting down the engine every time the craft was inverted. During this process the crafts rotation changed from a right roll to a left roll. still Jeb was able to get the craft to 8km before it started back into a right roll. Jeb gave the engines their final blast of fuel as the craft passed 9km. Slow the craft continued to rise as the craft spun its was to a maximum height of  12.6km. Sadly though Jeb was unable to get a crew report as it was to brief a time above 12.5km

A bit worst for wear Jeb and most of the craft was recoverable.

Although the mission was a success the C series rocket was a failure. Since we were able to recover Sparrow 1 with its flight recorder in take, our engineers were able to create a video of what happened during the flight.

(this is why I enjoy KSP, even when you think you did thing right something unexpected can happen and you just have to deal with it.)
